AI, Data, and Digital Cooperation

Advances in artificial intelligence and digital technologies offer enormous opportunities to improve people’s lives, yet the dizzying pace and scale of change pose challenges and risks that must be addressed.

The promise of AI, data, and digital technologies is being realized every day — through better healthcare, dynamic startups, and opportunities to learn. But many are excluded from this new technology. One-quarter  of the world’s population still lacks access to the internet, and still more lack the knowledge and skills to participate in and benefit from the digital age. Without global cooperation, the technologies reshaping our world risk deepening existing inequalities instead of reducing them.

The new opportunities also come with dangers that must be addressed. AI is supercharging the challenges of misinformation, erosion of trust, and creating new systemic vulnerabilities. These threats extend far beyond any one country’s borders, and the world must come together to ensure new technologies are deployed safely and equitably. The UN remains the only place where all countries can come together to unlock the benefits of new technologies and manage their risks.

The UN Foundation works with the UN and a diverse community of partners to strengthen data, harness technology for sustainable development, and promote cooperation in the digital age. By supporting inclusive discussions, underpinned by the evidence and experience of key stakeholders, we help build trust and strengthen cooperation for AI, digital technologies, and data.
