As the world marks the birth of the 7 billionth child this month, the United Nations Association of the USA (UNA-USA) and its more than 100 chapters around the country are using the historic moment to foster important dialogues about global growth and the vital roles the UN plays in local communities.

“The United Nations is working to address the most pressing challenges facing the world’s 7 billion people: health, peace and security, and environmental sustainability,” said Patrick Madden, executive director, UNA-USA. “UNA-USA chapters have an important role in helping citizens across the U.S. understand how the UN works to guide the world’s conversations and delivers critical solutions to the growing population.”

UN agencies such as the UN Population Fund, UN Environment Programme, and UN Women are at the forefront of working to address the challenges that come with population growth. UNA-USA has stood alongside the UN since its inception, and helped tell the UN story as the population topped 5 billion and 6 billion. As we reach this new global milestone, UNA-USA chapters continue to provide an essential meeting place for Americans to discuss the evolving slate of global issues being addressed by the UN and the United States’ critical role in shaping and delivering solutions.

About the United Nations Foundation
The United Nations Foundation, a public charity, was created in 1998 with entrepreneur and philanthropist Ted Turner’s historic $1 billion gift to support UN causes and activities.  We build and implement public/private partnerships to address the world’s most pressing problems, and work to broaden support for the UN through advocacy and public outreach.  Through our campaigns and partnerships, we connect people, ideas, and resources to help the UN solve global problems.  These campaigns focus on reducing child mortality, empowering women and girls, creating a new energy future, securing peace and human rights, and promoting technology innovation to improve health outcomes.  These solutions are helping the UN advance the eight global targets known as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).  For more information, visit www.unfoundation.org.
