People often read the news and feel hopeless – but there are so many reasons to feel hopeful. Yes, the world faces big challenges. But no, they’re not unsolvable. When we mobilize, tangible, positive change can happen – and it is happening.
Congress doesn’t always do things on time, but sometimes they really do get it right. Four months into the fiscal year, our lawmakers have passed a trillion dollar budget that goes a long way toward furthering American interests in global health and development.
Well, this is certainly not how I wanted to start 2014: This week, Congress sent President Obama a final spending bill for the rest of the year that underfunds United Nations peacekeeping by 12 percent, cuts funds for vital missions like South Sudan, and zeroes out funding for the newest UN mission in Mali.

Last year, on December 21st, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution recognizing the significant role entrepreneurship can play in reaching sustainable development goals. The United Nations Foundation works with entrepreneurs dedicated to not only building businesses, but a better world. This time of year, we are especially mindful of the importance of giving. But for Americans, this value has a much longer shelf life than just one season. It?s a good thing: Because, for more than 9 million Syrians uprooted by war, livelihoods may well depend on our help.
