World Health Assembly
Amidst compounding crises, the 77th World Health Assembly (WHA) will brought together ministers of health and other governmental leaders from its 194 Member States alongside other dignitaries and experts. While in Geneva, they focused on accelerating the goal of health for all and ensured the world has the resources needed to address health challenges of the future.
The theme of 2024 Assembly was “All for Health, Health for All,” and this collective solidarity was essential as leaders worked to address complex issues like pandemic prevention, preparedness, and response (PPPR); WHO financing; and emerging health threats — including antimicrobial resistance and climate change.
Among the dozens of items on the agenda, representatives discussed defeating polio, malaria, and HIV; increasing access to universal health coverage and immunization; and ensuring better maternal and reproductive health outcomes. The Assembly also launched the WHO Investment Round, continuing its efforts to ensure WHO has predictable, sustainable financing to support its core work. The Investment Round will culminate in a high-level financing event later this year.
One of the most notable discussions occurred around Member States’ plans to improve PPPR mechanisms. Following years of negotiations, WHA77 marked the deadline for amendments to the existing International Health Regulations (2005) and adoption of a new pandemic agreement or accord.
In addition to these official discussions, Member States and non-state actors hosted a wide range of convenings at various locations around Geneva and online.
