COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund for WHO: Partner Toolkit

Welcome Message

We are all affected by the growing COVID-19 pandemic. It’s an unprecedented health challenge and we know people and organizations everywhere want to help. The World Health Organization is leading and coordinating the global effort, supporting countries to prevent, detect, and respond to the pandemic. The greatest need right now is to help ensure all countries are prepared, especially those with the weakest health systems.

That is why we have created the new COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund, at the request of the World Health Organization and powered in partnership by the United Nations Foundation and the Swiss Philanthropy Foundation. The COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund will give individuals, companies, and philanthropies alike the ability to directly support the World Health Organization’s and partners’ efforts to track and understand the spread of the virus; to ensure patients get the care they need and frontline workers get essential supplies and information; and to accelerate efforts to develop vaccines, tests, and treatments.

We encourage you to make a contribution to the COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund for WHO via covid19responsefund.org and welcome you to share this important giving opportunity with your networks. Fund contributions will go directly to support efforts as outlined in WHO’s Strategic Preparedness and Response Plan, to help all countries step up their preparedness to prevent COVID-19, enhance their abilities to detect and test for the virus, and bolster their ability to respond to stop COVID-19 spread.

Elizabeth Cousens
President and CEO of the United Nations Foundation

KEY MESSAGES
  • Diseases don’t respect borders and we will only beat this pandemic by working together – across countries, communities, and sectors.
  • There’s never been a more urgent time to support a strong global response. That’s why the World Health Organization exists, that’s why the United Nations exists.
  • WHO is leading and coordinating the global response, ensuring all countries can prevent, detect, and respond to the pandemic, especially where needs are greatest.
  • Right now there are real concerns about:
    • Healthcare workers who face shortages of personal protective equipment and critical equipment to do their lifesaving work without putting their own health at risk;
    • Vulnerable countries and communities that could be particularly badly hit;
    • Speeding up progress towards a vaccine that everyone can get.
  • The COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund was started by the UN Foundation and Swiss Philanthropy Foundation at the request of WHO. It is the only way for individuals and organizations to directly contribute to WHO’s global work to defeat COVID-19.
  • We are seeing incredible generosity and compassion from individuals, companies, and organizations all over the world. Donations support:
    • Helping to track and understand the spread of the virus;
    • Ensuring patients get the care they need, and frontline workers get essential supplies and information;
    • Helping countries, especially those with fewer resources, expand their healthcare capacity and reduce the impact of the virus, particularly amongst the most vulnerable;
  • Already, WHO has sent more than 4.5 million pieces of personal protective equipment – including masks, gloves, overalls – to more than 133 countries, and 1.5m testing kits to 126 countries.
  • WHO has invited UNICEF and CEPI (Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations) to become partners in the Fund, to increase support for the most vulnerable communities, especially children, and to speed development of a vaccine.
  • Allocations from the Fund are decided by WHO in line with its Strategic Preparedness and Response Plan, and will include UNICEF, CEPI and other partners.
