UN Foundation Statement on the 2024 U.S. Presidential Election

In response to the election of Donald J. Trump and J.D. Vance as the next President and Vice President of the United States, United Nations Foundation President and CEO Elizabeth Cousens issued the following statement:

“The American people have voted, and Donald J. Trump has been elected the 47th President of the United States. We congratulate President-elect Trump and Vice President-elect Vance and stand ready to work with the incoming Administration to ensure a strong U.S.-UN partnership for the future.

“The new Administration will take office at a time of great consequence for our world and as the UN prepares to mark its 80th anniversary. The United States was indispensable in creating the United Nations eight decades ago after the devastation of the Second World War, when the UN Charter was signed in San Francisco and later ratified by the U.S. Senate with deep bipartisan support.

“President-elect Trump will inherit a strong U.S.-UN relationship, built through bipartisan leadership over many years, that affords unique U.S. influence across the United Nations system, including as host of the UN’s Headquarters in New York.

“Today, with geopolitical tensions on the rise and human rights on the back foot, we face an urgent need to turn challenges and risks into progress and possibility — from artificial intelligence to climate change. The Trump-Vance Administration has a unique opportunity to affirm America’s commitment to working with allies and partners the world over, including through the United Nations, to advance the highest values and most enduring interests of the people of the United States.

“The United Nations Foundation and Better World Campaign stand ready to work with the incoming Administration, U.S. Congress, civil society, and all partners to solve global challenges for the betterment of the United States and the world.”
