UN Foundation Vice-Chair Senator Timothy E. Wirth released the following statement on the appointment of Mayor Michael Bloomberg as United Nations Special Envoy for Cities and Climate Change.

“The appointment of Michael Bloomberg as a UN Special Envoy for Cities and Climate Change is an inspired decision by the Secretary-General. Tackling climate change will take innovative action at all levels.  Mayors all over the world are a force for real change, and Mayor Bloomberg has led by example in New York City. He knows that clean energy technologies pay off in terms of economics, politics, and public health as well as the environment. Together with President Clinton and the C40 Climate Leadership Group of mayors around the world, Michael Bloomberg has encouraged climate action at the local level; now he can take his advocacy to a global level.”
