The UN Foundation hosted its annual Global Leadership Awards on November 16, 2023 to recognize extraordinary individuals and organizations whose work embodies the values and purposes of the UN — to create a safer, healthier, and fairer world for everyone, everywhere. That work has always been invaluable. Today, it’s indispensable.

The founders of the United Nations, uniting after years of great strife and suffering, believed in the power of cooperation to create a better world. They made a promise to future generations. And they saw limitless possibilities if ‘We the Peoples’ work together with common purpose.

Inspired by that faith, we honor remarkable leaders who are making a difference.

PREVIOUS HONOREES have included government and world leaders, human rights champions, artists and activists, corporate leaders and innovators.

Jack and Laura Dangermond, President and Vice President of Esri, were presented with the Goal 17 Innovation in Partnership award.

Dr. Fisk Johnson, Chairman and CEO of SC Johnson, accepts the Leadership for a Better World award.

Sara Menker, Founder and CEO of Gro Intelligence, accepts the SDG Vanguard award.

Shane Doherty, Headquarters Liaison, Black Sea Initiative, and Rebeca Grynspan, Secretary-General of UNCTAD, receive the UN Heroes award.

Jayathma Wickramanayake, the former UN Secretary-General's Envoy on Youth, presents the SDG Vanguard award to Hickmatu Leigh.

The We the Peoples Awards is an opportunity to hear from the world’s leading changemakers, connect with the UN, and explore the frontiers of global impact. The awards support the UN Foundation’s work to accelerate the SDGs, raise climate ambition, and reimagine multilateral cooperation for a better and fairer future.

In 2023, UN Foundation presented the following awards:

The Champion for Global Change Award to recognize enlightened leadership in working towards a more prosperous and equitable world for us all.
The UN Heroes Award to honor the extraordinary compassion, courage, and determination of UN frontline workers.
The SDG Vanguard Award to recognize leaders whose work and impact reflects the urgency of the SDG agenda and the imperative to leave no one behind.
The Goal 17 Innovation in Partnership Award to recognize the impact of strategic partnership toward achieving the Goals.
The Leadership for a Better World Award honors extraordinary leaders across sectors, whose work creates a more sustainable world.
