This is it – after months of debates, television ads and political rallies – Americans will exercise their democratic right to vote today. From Asia to Europe, the whole world is watching to see who will be elected the next President of the United States of America. I hope you will join me and millions of Americans today in not only voting, but thinking global when you go to the polls.
According to the Better World Campaign’s polling conducted in October, three in four Americans say international issues will impact their vote this election, while eight in ten Americans support working with International organizations like the United Nations. Election Day reminds me how lucky I am to live in a country where I am given the democratic power to make a difference, something that not every country is given the right to do.
One of the many reasons I support the UN is because it promotes free and democratic elections and the right to vote around the world. Did you know that South Sudan held it’s very first democratic election this year? Thanks to the work of the UN and UN Peacekeeping, the people of South Sudan took their government into their own hands. The UN works every day to support similar elections and promote democracy – two things that are in the interest of all Americans.
No matter who wins, voters want a strong U.S. – UN relationship.
