Within weeks, 14 family members had died from Ebola, largely due to lack of knowledge on what the illness was and how to treat it. When William and his son Patrick began experiencing the same symptoms, he decided to go to an Ebola treatment unit. On August 31, William and his son were released after they recovered from the virus.
