Last night, Fast Company—the world’s leading progressive business media brand—named the Mobile Alliance for Maternal Action (MAMA) winner of its Innovation By Design Award in the Service Design category.

MAMA was recognized for its unique partnership focused on changing and saving the lives of the new and expectant mothers in developing countries with vital and culturally-sensitive health messages via their mobile phones. More than 1,700 organizations were nominated for this coveted award, including Nike, Boeing, and Ford.

Kirsten Gagnaire, Global Director of MAMA, accepted the award and reminded the audience about the challenges mothers in many countries face in accessing basic information to keep themselves and their babies healthy. MAMA in partnership with USAID, Johnson & Johnson, mHealth Alliance, United Nations Foundation, and BabyCenter will continue to enhance new and existing mobile health information programs for moms.

Asha Sarker, a mother who lives in the slums of Dhaka, Bangladesh was empowered to improve her health and the life of her newborn through the support of MAMA. Like millions of mothers living in poverty, access to vital health information is a matter of life or death. MAMA helped Asha and other mothers across 35 countries get access to adaptable, culturally-sensitive messages on topics including newborn care, breastfeeding, immunizations, and connections to local health resources. Access to health information continues to help save more lives and support mothers like Asha.
