Communications is vital to both addressing global problems and advancing global progress. The more communication we have, the more awareness we have, and the better equipped we are to tackle global challenges. In the United Nations Foundation’s work to support the United Nations, it’s become clear that the first step toward action on global challenges is to make sure people know about them.

Each year, millions of people around the world tune in to watch the Super Bowl. It’s a global stage for football, but it’s also one of the world’s biggest communications opportunities. Over the years, commercials during the Super Bowl have become just as popular as the game itself. Some focus on products, others on services, and a few on social good issues. I’ll admit it: the last type of commercials is my favorite part of the game. They are an example of how smart communications on one of the world’s biggest marketing stages can share an important message and raise awareness of important issues with a global audience.

Here are five of this year’s Super Bowl ads that stood out to me for spreading the word on social good issues.

 

Colgate – #EveryDropCounts

“Colgate encourages you to turn off the faucet while brushing your teeth. You could save nearly 3,000 gallons of water a year. Together make every drop of water count.”

 

Pantene – Strong is Beautiful | Pantene Dad-Do

“Girls who spend quality time with their dads grow up to be stronger women.” In this ad, Pantene teams up with some of the toughest dads in the NFL to prove it. This ad sends a strong message that empowering girls is an obligation for everyone, men and women.

 

SunTrust – Hold Your Breath | SunTrust onUp Movement

“SunTrust is kicking off a movement to help millions of Americans move from financial stress to financial confidence.” Financial literacy isn’t a hot topic in the news, but it’s essential to making sure families are economically secure.

 

Campbells – This One’s for Mom

“Every day. Every game. Mom is there, no matter what.” In this ad, Campbells pays tribute to mothers everywhere. Every day, the UN Foundation works with and for mothers around the world. They are the foundation for a healthy, secure families, and we share the #MomPride.

 

Mini USA – Serena Williams | #DefyLabels

Mini USA encourages viewers to be unique and believe in themselves. “Those who defy labels, define themselves. Only you can define you.” I love that this ad reminds us that individuals are at the heart of everything we do – something that should be embraced and celebrated.

 

So whether your team prevailed or failed during the big game, these commercials gave us all something to cheer about…smart messaging that helps build a better world!
