UN Foundation Chairman and Founder Ted Turner and Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa Build the Buzz about Malaria at Local School

LA Mayor Joins The United Nations Foundation's Nothing But Nets Campaign, Its Chairman Ted Turner, And The La Galaxy To Raise Awareness In LA About Saving Lives By Ending Malaria

Today, LA Mayor Villaraigosa presented Ted Turner, Founder and Chairman of the United Nations Foundation, and the UN Foundation’s Nothing But Nets™—a global, grassroots campaign to end malaria in Africa—with a certificate of recognition for the campaign’s work to promote sending bed nets to save lives from malaria. The presentation was followed by a malaria-education workshop for local students at Gompers Middle School to encourage them to act locally to make a global impact.

“With the World Cup starting next week, all eyes are on Africa, where malaria is a leading killer of children,” said Ted Turner. “Malaria kills nearly one million people every year, but it doesn’t have to be that way. We’re thankful to have everyone from Mayor Villaraigosa to young students join the movement to end malaria, and help us get one step closer to ending this disease.”

Nothing But Nets™ arrived in LA as part of its “Buzz Tour,” a country-wide journey to more than 20 cities in the lead up to the FIFA World Cup, which will be played for the first time in Africa—where 90 percent of malaria deaths occur. The tour, traveling in a sustainable, eco-friendly converted school bus, hosted a series of events throughout the week in the LA area to raise awareness about the global goal to end malaria deaths by 2015.

The Buzz Tour concludes its stop in Los Angeles tonight at the Home Depot Center, where the LA Galaxy will Unite Against Malaria as part of Nothing But Nets™’ national partnership with Major League Soccer to kick malaria out of Africa.

Every 30 seconds, a child dies from malaria — which can be prevented through the use of an insecticide-treated bed net. The nets create a protective barrier against mosquitoes at night, when the vast majority of malaria transmissions occur, and are one of the most cost-effective methods of preventing the spread of the disease. One bed net can protect a family of four for up to five years. It costs just $10 to purchase a net, distribute it, and educate the recipient on its proper use.

To date, Nothing But Nets™ has raised more than $30 million and has distributed more than three million nets to children, pregnant women, and refugees throughout Africa. For more information, including photos, video, and Buzz Tour schedule, log on to www.NothingButNets.net/buzztour.
